Understanding Hybrid Vehicle Batteries

Hybrid vehicles have two separate battery systems, and it is important to understand which one we are talking about. The high-voltage traction battery (the large battery pack that powers the electric motor) is a specialty component that requires dealer-level equipment and training to service. OKC Mobile Auto does not service high-voltage traction batteries. What we do service is the 12V auxiliary battery — the smaller, conventional-type battery that powers the accessories, runs the computer systems, and enables the vehicle to start up and initialize the hybrid system.

Every hybrid vehicle has a 12V auxiliary battery, and it fails just like any other car battery — usually after 3-5 years, sooner in Oklahoma's heat. When this battery dies, the hybrid system cannot initialize, and the car will not start even though the high-voltage traction battery may be perfectly fine. This confuses a lot of hybrid owners who assume the big, expensive hybrid battery has failed when it is actually just the little 12V battery that needs replacement.

Common hybrid vehicles we replace 12V batteries in across the Oklahoma City area: Toyota Prius (all generations — uses a small Group 46B24R or S34B20R battery, typically located in the trunk), Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Insight, Honda CR-V Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Kia Niro, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Chevrolet Bolt (technically an EV, but it has a 12V battery too). Each has a specific battery location and size — many are not under the hood.

Hybrid 12V Battery Specifics

Hybrid 12V batteries differ from standard car batteries in a few important ways. Many hybrids use smaller form factor batteries — the Toyota Prius uses a Group 46B24R or S34B20R, which is significantly smaller than the Group 24 or 35 used in most non-hybrid Toyotas. This smaller battery fits in the limited space available (usually in the trunk or under the rear seat, away from the high-voltage components in the engine bay).

Some hybrid 12V batteries are AGM by design. The frequent start-stop cycling of a hybrid system, combined with the need for reliable power to the hybrid control computers, makes AGM batteries a better fit. If your hybrid came with an AGM 12V battery, replace it with an AGM — a conventional battery will not perform correctly in this application.

Battery location in hybrids is often non-standard. The Toyota Prius puts it in the trunk, under the panel on the passenger side. The Hyundai Ioniq puts it in the trunk as well. Some Honda hybrids have it under the hood in the traditional location. Ford Escape Hybrid (2005-2012) has it under the cargo floor. Knowing where the battery is and how to access it saves time and ensures we come prepared with the right tools. When you call OKC Mobile Auto with a hybrid vehicle, let us know the specific model so we can verify the location and battery type before heading out.
