What Size Battery Does My Car Need? A Guide for OKC Drivers
Oklahoma City & Surrounding Areas
Understanding Battery Group Sizes
Every vehicle requires a specific battery group size — a standardized designation that defines the battery's physical dimensions, terminal type, and terminal placement. The Battery Council International (BCI) established these group numbers so that batteries are interchangeable within the same group regardless of manufacturer. If your car takes a Group 35, any manufacturer's Group 35 battery will physically fit, and the terminals will be in the right position for your cables.
The most common group sizes in the Oklahoma City vehicle population: Group 24/24F — used in many older Toyota, Honda, and some GM vehicles. Dimensions: approximately 10.25 x 6.8 x 8.9 inches. Group 35 — one of the most popular sizes. Used in Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Honda Accord (some years), Subaru models, and many midsize sedans. Dimensions: approximately 9.1 x 6.9 x 8.9 inches. Group 47/H5 — increasingly common in newer Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Dimensions: approximately 9.6 x 6.9 x 7.5 inches.
Group 48/H6 — used in many GM vehicles (Chevy Malibu, Equinox, some Silverado configurations) and some European vehicles. Dimensions: approximately 10.9 x 7.5 x 7.6 inches. Group 51R — used in Honda Civic, CR-V, Accord (some years), and Acura models. The R indicates reverse terminal position. Dimensions: approximately 9.4 x 5.1 x 8.8 inches. Group 65 — the standard truck and SUV battery. Used in Ford F-150, Explorer, and many other large vehicles. Dimensions: approximately 12.1 x 7.5 x 7.6 inches. Group 78 — common in GM trucks and SUVs (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban). Dimensions: approximately 10.3 x 7.1 x 7.3 inches.
Beyond Group Size: CCA and Battery Type
Group size ensures physical fit, but CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) determines whether the battery can actually start your engine. CCA is the amount of current a battery can deliver at 0 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 seconds while maintaining at least 7.2 volts. Higher CCA means more starting power in cold conditions — important for Oklahoma mornings that dip into the 20s and 30s.
Your vehicle manufacturer specifies a minimum CCA requirement. A four-cylinder Corolla might need 450 CCA minimum. A V6 Camry needs 550+. A V8 F-150 needs 750+. A diesel truck needs 850+. Always install a battery that meets or exceeds the manufacturer's CCA specification. Going above the minimum is fine (more is better for cold starts), but never go below it.
Battery type matters too. Most vehicles use conventional flooded lead-acid batteries. Vehicles with start-stop technology, many European vehicles, and some newer domestic models require AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries. AGM batteries handle the repeated deep cycling of start-stop systems and provide more stable power for advanced electronics. If your vehicle came with an AGM battery from the factory, always replace with AGM. Do not downgrade to conventional — it will cause charging system issues and premature failure.
Let Us Match the Right Battery for You
Not sure what battery your car needs? That is exactly what we are here for. Call OKC Mobile Auto at (405) 295-0635 and tell us your vehicle year, make, model, and engine size. We look up the exact battery specification — group size, minimum CCA, and required type (conventional or AGM) — and confirm we have it in stock. No guesswork on your part, no risk of buying the wrong battery.
We then deliver and install the correct battery at your location anywhere in the Oklahoma City metro. The battery matches your vehicle perfectly — right size, right terminals, right power, right technology. Guaranteed. If you have already bought a battery and are not sure it is the right one, we can verify the specification before you go through the hassle of installing it.
