Spring Break Road Trip Checklist: Get Your Car Ready Before You Hit the Highway

Spring break is here, Oklahoma! Whether you're heading south on I-35 toward Dallas and the Gulf Coast, cruising I-44 to Branson or Joplin, or pointing the car west on I-40 toward Amarillo and Colorado, one thing matters more than your playlist: making sure your car can actually get you there and back.

Your Pre-Trip Checklist

Before you load up the cooler and the kids, walk through this list:

• Tires: Check pressure on all four tires (including the spare!) when they're cold. Look for uneven wear, cracks, or low tread. A quick penny test works — if you can see all of Lincoln's head, those tires need replacing before a highway trip.
• Brakes: Squealing, grinding, or a soft brake pedal? Get that checked now, not when you're doing 75 on the turnpike with a trailer behind you.
• Fluids: Oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Top them off or get a full fluid check.
• Belts and hoses: Look for cracks, fraying, or soft spots. A blown belt 200 miles from home is nobody's idea of a vacation.
• Battery: Spring weather in Oklahoma is wildly unpredictable, and the cold snaps we just had may have weakened your battery. A quick test takes five minutes.
• Lights: Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights. Check them all — you'll be driving at night.
• Wipers: Oklahoma spring storms pop up fast. Make sure your wipers aren't streaking or skipping.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Even a well-maintained car can have a bad day. Throw together a kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, water bottles, phone chargers, and a basic tool set. If you have kids in the car, add snacks — trust us on that one.
